Everyone’s favorite everyman, IndyCar pit reporter and minor celebrity Jon Beekhuis had caught our staff’s attention previously – he’s undoubtedly an intriguing, elusive character in IndyCarland. Now his unexplained absence from television has once again caught our attention.
Missing from broadcasts since St. Pete, Beekhuis has been nowhere to be found. This is odd, as it comes off Jon’s abruptly leaving race control after a brief tenure working for IndyCar at the end of last season. This was followed up by public announcements stating that he’d be on both television networks wall to wall this season. Yet now he’s going over a month without a single appearance? IRR thinks there’s something rotten in Denmark.
On Twitter Jon responded to a fan’s question about his absence, first Tweeting on April 12th he’s “Not scheduled for the next few, but will be back for most of IndyCar season starting [with the] GPofIndy.” Two days later he responded to another fan’s query with “No worries [. . .] all is well. Still doing double duty, just won’t start until Carb Day.” Strange, as the Grand Prix of Indy is on May 9 while Carb Day is thirteen days later on Friday the 22nd.
Genuinely wondering, we ask what gives? Hopefully his Tweet was honest and everything is in fact all right. As we’ve previously noted, his comments on an article appearing on this site were a bit peculiar. They now seem more so, particularly when coupled with an erratic IndyCar schedule and string of recent absences from television. The burning question remains, where’s Beekhuis been?
